A few words about the recordings of viola artist Dr. Krzysztof Maria Komendarek – Tymendorf.

1. CD: QUANTUM OF SILENCE, Odradek Records, and

2. CD: ReVIOLAtion, NAXOS.

REFLECTION: The best word to express my reflections about these recordings is:  REVELATION!

PROFESSIONALISM:

·            Impressive instrumental prowess

·            Natural, very deep, beautiful sound

·            Comprehensible narration

·            Attractive articulation

·            Excellent time management, especially between phrases

·            Logical phrasing.

·            Impressive  variety of timbres

·            A delightful range of dynamics

  INTERPRETATION:

·        Generally, I am reluctant to comment on interpretation, mindful of the ancient instruction De gustibus non est disputandum.

·         Admittedly, sound, as opposed to words, has no specific meaning, but this wonderful Art which Music is, can express  almost unlimited states of human soul, by means of sounds. It can speak of great pain and of heavenly joy.

·        Most of the pieces on both CDs are unfamiliar to me, but I had no problem understanding the proposed dramatic structure, which, at least for me, is absolutely clear.

·       The courage to speak with one's own voice in an atmosphere of freedom, without the corset of obligations, recommendations, or doctrines, is commendable.

·        My  sensibility perceives this performance and recording as  three-dimensional. This is the first time I have used the term with satisfaction.

GENERAL:

  • A great booklet. It is rare that the booklet is not an addition to the CD but belongs to the disc as if it were its component.
  • A brilliant idea of recording the viola solo. The performer successfully presented a huge festival of possibilities of this unusual instrument.

CODA:

·        A few words by Chopin to conclude my deliberations.

This is what Frederick used to say to his students: "Music is to speak, the pianist is to sing".
